Thoughts and Prayers with Tim Santos

Please keep my Kung Fu brother and friend, Tim Santos and his family, in your prayers.

Tim was in an automobile accident recently and is in ICU at McAllen Medical Center. He has some damage on his vertebrae behind his neck, but has feeling and movement throughout his body, which is a good sign. Please keep him in prayer for a speedy and full recovery as well as dealing with the injury too.

God bless,

I love this mentality!!

I recently came across this video of Rickson Gracie’s training mentality and some method.

He does various exercises and some breathing techniques that are probably comparable to Chinese Chi Gung methods.

What I really like is that Rickson is always trying to make himself better. There are many Wing Chun practitioners who do not seek to go above and beyond in their art. They are content to simply learn the self defense aspects and that is fine. But Martial Arts, and Wing Chun in particular, teaches you how to control yourself. We do Siu Lim Tao and the forms because we have to teach our mind how to control our body. We have reference points and certain structures so that we don’t just do “whatever we want.”  We are learning about ourselves as we do the art.

I guess I could say my problem with the “modernist” Mixed Martial Arts and its lack of committment to one discipline ends up lacking discipline and teach you control. If you can’t control yourself, how do you expect to control others? This is what Chum Kiu introduces us to. Once we are proficient at controlling our own bodies and minds through Siu Lim Tao, we are introduced to Chum Kiu and our opponent and techniques to bridge with and control our opponent. Proficency in controlling others leads to Biu Jee and beyond.

Listen to Rickson Gracie and hear the passion in his voice and see it in his training. Enjoy

New Take on an old video

Ok, so recently YouTube disabled the audio on my “What is Wing Chun Kung Fu?” video because it featured “Through the Fire and Flames” by DragonForce. Needless to say, I decided to add some different music and a new picture at the end…hope you guys enjoy it.

Wing Chun starting to make inroads in the media

How cool is this? I have been hearing that Nicholas Cage uses Wing Chun in the movie Bangkok Dangerous but never was able to check it out….here is a clip of him teachings some parry drills, dan chi sao and chi sao as well as some clips of Robert Downey, Jr. (whom we all know from Tropic Thunder and Iron Man) at a his Wing Chun class and talking about Wing Chun with David Letterman. Enjoy
